In October of 2011, Seeds began a partnership with Peter Howell Elementary. In this, we hoped (and still hope) to be able to serve the school and to build lasting relationships with the staff, students, and their families. Education is one of the areas in which Seeds specifically hopes to impact for the better in Tucson, but we don't just want to leave it there! We see Howell as a broad community of young learners, of hard-working educators, and of outlying families who pour into the children. We want to value each of these entities, serve them, and get to know them.
For our ice-breaker project with Howell, eleven Seeds volunteers showed up to help kindergartners plant two flower beds of snapdragons. The goal was for the kids to learn about gardening, enhance their classroom experience, and have some fun. We see gardening with the kids as an enriching project with lots of potential for the future, and are excited to expand our capabilities in this.
We created some bookmarks to commemorate the event. |
Snapdragons, watering cups, soil, and kids, all ready to go! |
The garden beds were small enough to accommodate for small hands and arms. Seeds volunteers helped the kids plant their own snapdragons. |
