Celebrations of 2011: Howell Garden Work Days

Seeds volunteers help move some potting soil.

Since our initial ground-breaking at Howell, we've conducted two garden work-days in 2011, and one more in 2012. In addition to the small planting beds that the kindergarteners planted their snapdragons in, we are building and refurbishing larger raised planting beds in which we can plant a greater variety of things. We moved and refurbished some existing raised gardening beds in the Howell courtyard, and built a new one using cinder blocks. We eventually hope to be able to add a touch of art and color to the garden, perhaps by painting rocks or ceramic tiles with the kids. We hope they can make it their own, and we look forward to the opportunity to continue fostering a love for gardening and learning alike with the kids.

Here are some more highlights from the work days:

One old planting bed had to be moved and the grass uprooted
Rather than use the older materials, we decided instead
to start fresh. This design also allows more little hands
to reach their flowers.
We had some kid volunteers among our
number - they were excellent little planters!
