Together Everyone Achieves More

From The Editor

At Seeds, we recognize the merits of team work. Together we are:

  • applying a mix of skills and gifts
  • solving complex problems that take more than one mind
  • coordinating individual activities towards a common bigger goal
  • giving people a sense of belonging
  • enhancing communication
  • learning from each other
  • generating commitment

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near”

Drop off YOUR items here:

*        Second Mile gatherings or events
*        Second Mile/ Seeds Offices, 2327 E Speedway Blvd, Tucson
*        Peter Howell Elementary, 401 N Irving, Tucson (SE of 5th & Alvernon)
*       Contact me to pick up large quantities!

YOU CAN WIN, TOO!   For every item of e-waste contributed during this contest, you earn an entry into a drawing for one of the gift cards!  The more gift cards Seeds earns, the better your chances to walk away with one of them.

New Seeds Shirts!

Thanks Scott for all your help!

We invite you to help third graders tell their moms about watering plants with rain, kindergartners laugh at hovering hummingbirds, and teachers walk their students to the quiet of the Howell Elementary courtyard to learn about conserving and sustaining in the Sonoran Desert.

If we reach 50 shirts sold we will earn $376. All funds raised will go directly towards Seeds Community Center. Shirts will be delivered approximately 2 weeks after the close date. Please contact the Campaign Organizer, Scott Appleman, with any questions.

Knowing is Half the Battle

For a couple years now, Seeds has been fortunate to partner with Peter Howell Elementary, its staff, and its families. Peter Howell is a Title I school, which  means that
at least 40% of its students are in poverty. In attendance at Peter Howell are many
refugee,
low-income,
single-parent,
and otherwise needy households.

One first grade classroom recently had over 9 primary languages represented! We are now in the process of putting together a comprehensive needs assessment for the neighborhood surrounding the school to get a pulse on the demographics and genuine needs for the neighborhood. This is an incredibly important step in understanding what the neighborhood really needs from non-profit organizations like our own. It will help us to create effective programs for Howell, its families, and surrounding neighbors.

This needs assessment needs your help to get off the ground! We need volunteers to
package the survey,
lick envelopes,
and most importantly,to deliver it to the neighbors.

We would like to schedule a distribution day within the next couple of months.

For more information, please send us an email at seedscommunitycenter@gmail.com or contact Christy Harrison directly! Your help will be very useful to us!

Growing

Pumpkins! PUMPKINS! PUMPKINS!

Question: What's the ratio of a pumpkin's circumference to its diameter?
Answer: Pumpkin Pi!

The Seeds garden at Peter Howell Elementary is doing great. We've got some pumpkins in the patch.

Maintaining the garden takes work. A lot of time and care goes into growing great crops. This dry erase board will help document changes in the garden multiple times per week

Also, the school has a new water harvesting system. The cistern will be able to water the garden from collected rain water, how about that!

Check out the short film which documents the water cistern installation. You can watch it by clicking on the water drop or click the Youtube link on the Extras page.
